US Tariff Structure for Ecommerce Imports (2026)

US import duties are calculated on the customs value (product cost + shipping + insurance). Multiple tariff layers can stack:

  • Baseline Duty (0-48%): Set by the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) based on product type. Electronics are often 0-5%, while apparel and footwear can be 10-32%+.
  • Section 122 Surcharge (15%): A global import surcharge effective February 24, 2026 under emergency trade authority. Applies to goods from all countries. Set to expire after 150 days (~August 2026) but may be extended.
  • Section 301 Tariffs (China only, 25%): Additional tariffs on Chinese goods from the ongoing trade dispute. Applies on top of baseline + Section 122.

De minimis exemption suspended: Previously, imports under $800 entered duty-free. This exemption was suspended in early 2026. All imports now require customs clearance and duty payment.

Interpret the output

Chinese imports can face 40-50%+ total duty in 2026.

Baseline duty + Section 122 (15%) + Section 301 (25%) stacks up fast. If your effective tariff rate is over 30%, consider sourcing from Vietnam, India, or Mexico to avoid Section 301.
